The Right Of Seigniory In Theocratic Society

Chapter 1

The supreme being is the only Lord

536. This truth is perfectly well-known to human common sense. There is nothing more obvious than the title given by holy Scripture to the supreme Being, who is the `ONE LORD'.(38)

537. The evident truth of these words is equalled by the depth of their meaning; everyone can accept them, yet few can fully penetrate them. The uniqueness of dominion is equal to the uniqueness of being. The profoundly true meaning of the ancients' wise saying, `God alone is, other things are not,'(39) is matched by the equally profound statement, `God is the only Lord, and apart from him there is no lord'. It is surely evident that dominion cannot be exercised by what is not.

Notes

(38) Eph 4: 5.

(39) St. Augustine says: `And I looked at the things below you, and I saw that they neither are nor are not in every sense. They are because they are through you; they are not because they are not what you are. That truly is which remains unchangeably' (Conf., 7: 9).
