The Right Of Seigniory In Theocratic Society

Chapter 3

There is only one servitude

540. It follows directly that, as there is only one Lord, so there is only one servitude.

541. This principle is also the basis of the government exercised by God over his creatures. He wanted it written at the beginning of the positive legislation he gave to his people, `You shall worship the Lord, your God, and HIM ONLY SHALL YOU SERVE'(41) These words clearly command two things: the worship of God, and care to safeguard one's freedom from all service that is not divine.
Worship is the acknowledgement of the unique, absolute dominion of the supreme Being, by which the creature willingly submits himself to God. This full, voluntary submission to the supreme Being involves the necessity of not serving anything else because any other service would diminish that due to God. Every other service completely ceases to be such when compared with that of God.
